Reigate's William Caffyn joins England's 1st ever team and tour

On the 7th September 1859 Reigate Priory's first icon, William Caffyn, set sail on the SS Nova Scotia from Liverpool with 11 other England players. They were the very first English team on the first ever tour - to America.

Caffyn was a Reigate Grammar School boy who was the only player to go on all of England's first three tours, the other two being to Australia. He was born in Reigate and died at his family home at 20 Parkgate Road 100 years ago last week.

The photo, which is displayed in the clubhouse. shows Caffyn and the England team on the Nova Scotia about to set sail.

160 years later we are still producing England internationals with Jason Roy.
