It really was a case of rain, rain go away throughout the day. Not great for the players or Brickers with the covers going on and off throughout the game. Indeed there were spells where both teams were absolute stalwarts in playing on through the downpours.
Quick aside - the weather is set to be great from tomorrow on, so... Get ready for our annual celebration in the sun for the late and great Joey Benjamin in our Caribbean Cricket day. There will be lots going on at the club, food galore and more to celebrate Joey, with the U19s taking on RGS 1s at 14:00 and then a friendly Mens 1s taking on the RGS Old Boys at 18:00.
Please be there to support the teams and to remember everything that Joey did for the Club and School.
So to the Mogs game... Priory won the toss and elected to bat. Advaith Bali was the stand out batter for Priory, scoring 100 off 103 balls, with fourteen 4s and one six. A couple of quick wickets off the bowling of N Coles saw the loss of Seth McDowall and Samuel Clark with the score on 14-2. Jamie Quantick came in at 4 and knocked a brusque 34 off 27 with six 4s, and moved the score on 75-3 with Adi.
Michael Plimsoll was next in and scored a lovely 6, but fell for 7 (12) to the bowling of a certain A Tharp! Manoj Rajarethinam scored a solid 10 (25) with one 4, before also falling to an LBW decision from Mr Tharp again.
You couldn't keep Mr Tharp out of the action as he caught Srikanth Vuppala 2 (8) off the bowling of T Leaning. Then bowled Shayne Cossey for 6 (12).
Callum Gurbutt scored a delightful 16 *(8) including one six and two 4s, before Simon Morris 1 (3) was caught by that man Mr Tharp (again) off the bowling of J Fyfe. The Captain, Andrew Hoad was not out, without facing a ball.
Priory finished on 193-9 declared off 35.1 overs, when the rain came lashing down yet again and it was time for tea.
The Mogs started strongly but lost opener J Fyfe 12 (26) to a C&B by Callum Gurbett with the score on 22-1. J Brooker was moving the scoreboard along when J Bunyan fell for 1 (7) lbw to Andrew Hoad with the score on 39-2.
A few runs later W Loft was caught by Manoj Rajarethinam off the bowling of Andrew Hoad again with the score on 42-3.
At this point it looked like Priory were on top and they really pushed home their advantage when Srikanth Vuppala bowled opener J Booker 28 (27) and the score on 47-4. Srikanth kept up the pressure on the new batter, W Cooper with two dot balls, before having him c&b for the score at 47-5.
Simon Morris kept the rate under control, before Srikanth returned to bowl four dot balls to N Coles before bowling him for 5 (9) with the score at 53-6. Not content to let the new batter settle, Srikanth bowled T Leaning next ball, with the score at 53-7.
The ever proficient and more than capable Mr A Tharp then came to the crease, and proceeded to knock the ball to all parts of the ground. He scored an excellent 31 (20) including five 4s, and received well deserved crowd support from his teammates each time he found the boundary. He eventually fell to the bowling of Seth McDowall.
A special mention has to go to W Dowling who was forced to retire having faced 5 balls. He was an absolute legend for having a go at batting, having retired from opening the bowling and suffering a back spasm which meant he was not able to continue. We're aware that he has a long drive Friday, and wish him a speedy recovery and journey.
Phil Davies who went in at 5 was 8* (25), having knocked a single, bringing last man W Parker to the crease. Shayne Cossey bowled a beaut to W Parker and clipped the top of off to bring the Mogs innings to a close 91 all out off 21.2 overs.
It was a game played in great spirit by both sides.
Presenting the Peter Martin trophy, Andy Packham paid tribute to Peter Martin and reminded everyone of the deep history of the Mogs and Priory cricket. This is a special match between the clubs, and is highlighted by the fact that this is the only trophy to be played for in cricket week.
Last year the winner was 'rain' (apparently much cheaper on the engraving costs!), but the trophy was however retained by Priory having won it the year before.
Many thanks to Andy for his speech giving the history to the match, the deep links between the Mogs and Priory, and also for his diligence in polishing the trophy in readiness for the presentation!
