March 12th 1921 - A date of huge importance to Reigate

100 Years ago today Lady Henry Somerset died - she owned Reigate

Lady Henry Somerset was the daughter of the 3rd Earl Somers and she owned virtually the whole of Reigate, including most of the land Reigate Priory Cricket club is situated on. There were very few towns in any country that were owned by just one person. She died on the 12th March 1921 and her death set in motion a chain of events that the Cricket Club, and indeed the whole of Reigate, should be grateful for. Without going into the history of her life and marital difficulties suffice it to say that she was a hugely respected lady in numerous ways and did a huge amount of good and a great deal of charitable work.

On her death Reigate was left in the ownership of her son, Henry Charles Somers Augustus Somerset, who was MP for Croydon. He decided to effectively sell and dispose of the town of Reigate in its entirety. He gave certain areas, such as Reigate Heath, to the Council but sold much of the rest at auction in 260 lots. These lots covered some 400 shops, homes, farms and business premises, including several 18th century inns. It also included the Castle Grounds, the caves and the Old Town Hall. In keeping with the family's charitable nature Somers Somerset gave his tenants the option of leaving two thirds of the selling price on mortgage.

By the 24th November 1921 the Cricket Club had, prior to the auction, negotiated and purchased the freehold of the land we held on a 21 year lease for the princely sum of £800. The money was raised by donations from 100 members with over 50% of the money coming from just 12 donors.

Lady Henry and her son were instrumental in Reigate Priory CC securing the future of our facilities. We owe them a great deal.
