Match Report Reigate Rapids v Sutton Scorchers Friday 2nd August

Nigel Quantick3 Aug 2024 - 14:00

Dick Belcher writes...

Having won their opening fixture away at Oxted in the Under 19 Tier 1 T20 competition, Sutton Scorchers were the next opponents for the Llama U19’s.

Seth McDowall won the toss and chose to bat. Both the Sutton left arm opening bowlers were a little wayward in their opening few overs with 2 wides in each of the 1st 3 overs; however in among the wides were a few straight deliveries and Seth (1) lost his leg stump in the 1st over and Ben Ware (2) had his middle stump knocked out the ground and the Llamas were 8-2 in just the 2nd over.

Tommy Bates and Advaith Bali restored a bit of order taking the score onto 32 in the 5th over when Advaith (10) was caught (after a bit of juggling by Will Berrill) at gully. Will Jones (8) got a thin edge to keeper Dakin off the bowling of A Bansal for 54-4 and then a similar thin edge found the same outcome as Tommy Bates (13) was 5th out. Max Thomas then got an inside edge to be bowled by A Bansal and Reigate were in trouble at 56-6 in the 11th over.

The Sutton spinners were bowling well and keeping Reigate in check and things didn’t get any better as Jack Sadler chopped on for leg spinning A Bansal’s 3rd wicket. Aadil Raza (7) was caught and bowled by Will Berrill and in the same over (17th) Tom Harvey James smacked a six before he hit a short ball to be caught at deep square leg to be Will Berrill’s 2nd victim in his 1 over (1-0-8-2) as the Llamas were almost done at 80-9. Dexter Spring got a top edge and keeper Dakin, running backwards, took his 3rd catch and Reigate were all out for 84 after only 18 of the allotted 20 overs.

This was clearly an under par total but the game is never lost at the halfway stage. However Sutton started without incident before Jack Sadler had A Ganguly (17) caught by Advaith Bali diving forward at mid wicket for 28-1. The 2nd wicket didn’t come until the 8th over when with the score on 47 Jack Sadler called for and duly claimed the catch to dismiss A Rajnikanth (17) off Tommy Bates. Will Berrill (2) became Tommy’s 2nd wicket (4-0-21-2) to have Sutton at 53-3 in the 10th over.

With just 32 needed from the remaining 10 overs Sutton cruised towards their target mainly with A Bansal (19no) who followed up his fine bowling (4-0-12-3) for a man of the match performance. Will Jones (2.2-0-13-1) did have A Ragunathan (17) caught by Ben Ware to briefly hold up the inevitable win for Sutton who ended on 85-4 after just 15.2 overs.
