Many current members will not have had the pleasure of knowing Robert "Bob" Munn who sadly died in the early hours of September 5th. To the many club members who did know Bob he will be remembered very fondly not only for the warmth of his personality and his generosity but also for the amount that he did for the Club.
Bob was a member for some 20 years from the 1980s until about 2003 when he moved to the West Country in Somerset. The Club probably initially knew him as an umpire but he quickly threw himself into many other roles and for a 7 year period, at the turn of the century, had the key role of Club Treasurer. He had spent much of his working life with Liverpool Victoria which no doubt helped to mould his financial acumen.
To many of us though his finest contribution to the club, for which we will be eternally grateful, was to organise the Club's 15 day tour to Cape Town in South Africa in February 2000. Bob organised every aspect of it single handed from the accommodation, days at the races and wineries as well as 9 matches. In case you feel that is a lot 24 players went on the tour and another 18 or so wives and supporters. It was brilliant.
Bob was also a Lord's Taverner and a story I always enjoyed was when he ran Denis Thatcher back to Chequers after a Taverners do and Margaret Thatcher made Bob a cup of coffee with a big thank you for looking after Denis.
Bob had his 70th birthday when we were in South Africa so that would have made him 91 when he sadly passed away after a fairly long illness and final battle with dementia.
He was a lovely lovely man, a supportive Vice-President of the Club and our condolences go out to his many friends and in particular John Augustus to whom Bob was like a father and who looked after Bob in his failing health. R.I.P Robert.
