Debutant Crosthwaite ton in vain

The Llamas’ season began with a journey South and a 40 over friendly against defending Sussex Premier League champions Preston Nomads. A competitive fixture saw the Llamas fall just 1 run short chasing 258.

After losing the toss the Llamas took the field under sunny skies with the stunning South Downs providing the backdrop. Nomads’ opener Dan Phillips made use of a good pitch and fast outfield to blaze his way to 144, sharing a partnership of 147 for the 4th wicket with brother Aaron. The Llamas stuck to their task well with the ball and in the field, with Richard Stevens (2/35 from 8 overs) the pick of the bowlers. The partnership was eventually broken by skipper Richie Oliver, although not before several of his tempting offerings had been despatched over Devil’s Dyke. The innings concluded with 2 stumpings in the final over from new recruit James Crosthwaite as Nomads posted an imposing 258/6.

A target of more than 6 runs an over was always going to prove challenging, however the Llamas started brightly with Oliver and Sam Hall putting on 47 for the 1st wicket at better than a run a ball. Three quick wickets left the Llamas needing to rebuild and a partnership of 121 from Crosthwaite and Andy Delmont (47) set up a close finish. Crosthwaite went on the complete a magnificent century on debut from 88 balls but his dismissal in the 39th over left the Llamas needing 14 from the final over. Despite 28* from Advaith Bali including a towering 6 over long-off from the final ball of the innings, the Llamas finished 1 run short on 257/5.

Overall a great start to the season as the bowlers had a good workout and the batsmen spent time at the crease. Preston Nomads were excellent hosts throughout the day and we wish them well for the upcoming season. Both teams continued to enjoy the hospitality well into the evening.
