On an overcast day at Park Lane, the start of the match was delayed by half an hour after early showers, and with rain in the air. Priory won the toss and perhaps understandably, put Ashtead into bat, and Fraser Sheat and Ben Ware opened the bowling. Unfortunately, Ware pulled up lame in his second over, and was forced to pull out with an injury and George Ealham came on to finish the over.
After 10 overs, Ashtead were 42 for 0, before the Priory spinners then got into the game. They started bowling tightly and slowed down the run rate, and all 3 performed well (Munday 3-37, Tommy Bates, 2036 and Tendi Mataranyika, with 1-18 on debut. Tom Massey also bowled well, taking 2-26 as Ashtead were restricted to 200 for 9 off their 50 overs.
After the fireworks of last week's unbeaten opening stand of 245, Priory again started aggressively, and after 10 overs had raced to 64-0, though Richie Oliver was much quieter than last week and was very much the more cautious in approach. Luke Haughton and Richie put on 66 in 11.2 overs this week before Oliver was dismissed for 12.
George Ealham came in and looked good, scoring 37, as he and Luke put on 58 for the second wicket. Luke fell for an excellent 74, with the score on 124, with Luke's 50 coming from 53 balls. After 2 knocks, Luke has scored an amazing 187 runs for once out – outstanding! No dramas though when Luke fell, as Harry McKinley at 4 contributed 41 not out, and Fraser Sheat 21, as they put on 53 for the 4th wicket, before Fraser fell with Priory needing just 4 to win.
All in all, a pretty straightforward win by 6 wickets with more than 5 overs to spare, and Priory now sit in 4rd place but within just 4 points and touching distance of the top. Next week, Priory travel to Banstead who got themselves off the mark last week with an 8 wicket win over Esher. This will be the last 50 overs format match before the clubs move over to the longer timed matches in 2 weeks' time against East Molesey; and in the T20 cup, Priory are through to the 3rd round, where they will meet Oxted on Thursday June 5, at 6pm at Park Lane.
