A remarkable game saw an unlikely hero take centre stage

A remarkable game over at Wimbledon saw an unlikely hero take centre stage as Fraser McGuinness, batting at 10, came in with one ball of the 50 over contest between league leaders Wimbledon and third place Priory reached its climax. Off the penultimate ball with 4 still needed to win, skipper George Ealham was caught in the deep for 77, to leave Priory 8 down, and it looked as if the Priory's proverbial goose was cooked.

Cometh the hour, cometh that unlikely hero as Fraser, plucked out of Priory's 3s this season when Priory's 1s keeper for the last few seasons moved to Wimbledon, set himself to face the 6th ball of the 50th over with 4 to win.

And in a video clip that has gone viral, he cleared his front leg and absolutely creamed Wimbledon's opening bowler Matt Benning for 6 over long on - actually more cow corner, but a moment that Fraser and the Priory (and Wimbledon!) will always remember!

Momentous indeed and it moves the Llamas up to second place with 2 to play - now just 4 points behind Wimbledon, but 4 ahead of Sutton who slipped up against Banstead, with Ashtead now up to 4th.

Earlier in proceedings at Wimbledon, Priory had fought back well to dismiss the Dons for 235 with Fraser Sheat wicketless but bowling a superb 8 over spell for just 18 runs. Aussie Jack Boyle scored 67 before he was run out backing up, by skipper George Ealham, and Billy Sewell contributed a well-made 53.

Dick Stevens took 3-44, and Mikey Munday as ever cleaned up with 3-49 as Wimbledon’s last 3 wickets fell for 2 runs and they closed with nearly 4 of their allotted 50 overs to bat.

An early expression of McGuinness’s involvement in the day’s events was his 4 catches and a stumping in a top notch display of keeping.

In reply, after two successive unbeaten 100s, Richie Oliver started well but when he chipped one to mid on for 24, Priory were looking in some difficulty at 52-3.

George Ealham (77) and Fraser Sheat (66) thought otherwise though and put on 119, to keep Priory very much in the hunt.

And then came a mini- tumble… 11 off the last over required, and then the Fraser McGuinness show!

So now it’s all to play for as Priory travel to Spencer next Saturday before finishing up at home on September 6 against Sunbury.
