Debutant Pete Mitchell had the dream start for the Llamas, as his ton helped the 5s to a dominant total

A strong 5th team arrived at Banstead needing a win after two disappointing defeats in the league.
Owen Morris won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a very good wicket. This proved to be the case with 499 runs being scored from 90 overs at an average of 5.5 runs per over. The decision to bat first and post a big score proved to be a great call.
The team had previously suffered from losing wickets steadily throughout an innings, resulting in very few big partnerships or individual scores. When James Dodsworth was caught behind for 14 and other opener Simon Morris playing on for 9, it looked like the pattern was to be repeated. At 38 for 2, Peter Mitchell, playing his first game for the 5’s, was joined by Ross Gurbutt. The pair put on 35 runs in quick time before Ross was out lbw for 20. Peter was batting with confidence, seeing the ball really well and dispatching any loose delivery to the boundary. Matt van Staden, who proudly models himself on A B de Villiers, was in at number 5. A good partnership of 40 was built before Matt, on 24, left a straight one, which went on to hit off stump. Matt, “What would A B have said?” A mini collapse followed as both Aaron De Mello and Louis Adams were out without scoring. At 125 for 6, Ollie Massey joined Peter. They scored rapidly before Ollie was bowled for an excellent 43. Callum Gurbutt scored a brisk 23 (more than his brother) before being run out.
Owen faced the last 3 balls to secure his customary not out, scoring 1 run.
The backbone of the Llamas innings was a magnificent undefeated 106 from Peter Mitchell. His contribution was invaluable in Llamas reaching an impressive 260.
Banstead needed to score at 5.7 runs an over to win. Tight bowling from the opening attack of Phil Evans and Ollie Massey restricted Banstead to 30 runs off the first 10 overs. The run rate had now increased to over a run a ball. Ollie was replaced by Callum, who bowled an excellent 9 over spell, taking 4 wickets for 41 runs. Phil bowled a really tidy spell, completing his 9 overs for only 33 runs, this on an excellent batting wicket. As wickets steadily fell the run rate continued to grow. Owen took his first two wickets of the season for 39 runs from his 9 overs. The bowlers were supported in the field with catches by Ollie, Ross and Simon.
There was a spirited rear-guard action from the numbers 7 and 8 of Banstead, who scored rapidly but in reality the game was over after 30 overs. Ollie Massey picked up a wicket at the end and Phil threw in to run out the Banstead number 9. Banstead finished on 239 for 8.
This was a confidence building win and moves the 5’s up to fifth in the league, only 35 points behind the leaders.
Man of the match was Peter Mitchell for his excellent 106 not out.
