Gregson's beard endures as 5s fall short in Banstead chase

The 5th team came into the game following a very close defeat against Old Rutlishians the previous week.

Aaron won the toss, which when playing at the Red Lion is a significant call. Without hesitation Aaron invited Banstead to bat first. It must be noted that the Red Lion pitch is looking and playing much better.

Banstead got off to a flying start, scoring over 60 runs from the first 10 overs. Shamanna Devaraju took the first wicket supported by a fine catch from Matt Van Staden. Another excellent piece of fielding from Matt Van Staden resulted in the run out of the dangerous looking Banstead opener. Although the run rate fell following the departure of the openers, Priory were playing catch-up.

Simon Morris took the third wicket, caught by Sam Gregson. Sam then came onto bowl and took two wickets, with excellent catches from Sam Parker and Mahesh Yapahugedara. Bowling his off spin Mahesh took the 6th wicket out LBW. Sham threw in for a straightforward run out, as wickets now fell at regular intervals. Matt Weekes bowled a tidy spell taking 2 wickets. Sham finished off the innings with a catch behind taken by Geoff.

Banstead were all out for 198 from 37 overs. The fielding display from Priory was a highlight in the game, with no dropped catches and two run outs.

With 53 overs to reach their target Priory were in a positive mood over tea. Unfortunately early wickets encouraged the Banstead bowlers and wickets fell without any significant partnerships being formed. Only four players reached double figures - Sam Gregson 28, Sam Parker 18, Sham 12 and George Ellis 11. Priory were all out for an under par 107.

Priory find themselves at the bottom of the league. With Oxted our next opposition on Saturday we need a win.
