Women 1s vs Streatham & Marlborough

Nigel Quantick30 May - 21:15

Round 2 in the SWCL Elite T20 division with Reigate looking to build on their 7 wicket win over Guildford.

Captain Lucy Harris won the toss and elected to bat, taking the 1st ball for herself with Eleanor Clark at the non-striker’s end. The openers set about collecting runs at fine rate – racing to an unbeaten 78 off the first 7 overs with Captain Lucy bringing up her 50 three balls later from just 28 balls (eight 4’s and one 6). The last ball of the eleventh over brought up Reigate’s 100 with no wickets down. Streatham’s 1st & 2nd change bowlers persisted with leg-side deliveries, just within the umpire’s wide tolerance; this tactic never looked like it would bring a wicket, but did bring the run rate down.

Streatham finally broke through in the thirteenth over with Eleanor top edging a cut shot that carried to Third Man, departing on 31 from 37 balls, Reigate 109/1. Esmae Vos and Charlotte Mehmood followed, scoring 9 apiece, but all were supporting roles to the Skipper’s sparkling knock – Lucy’s 100 came in the 19th over from just 60 balls (fifteen 4’s and two 6’s), she finished on an unbeaten 112 from just 63 balls - Reigate 183/3.

183 seemed like a mountain for Streatham to climb, especially with the talented Reigate attack that was available. Sophie Bellew and Bella Barten shared the first 4 overs with Streatham’s openers never settling under a level of pace and swing that had not been seen in the first innings. The left handed number 2 was bowled in the fourth over, departing for just 2 from 12 balls, Bella bowling a beauty that pitched on leg and nipped back to remove the bails from the top of middle. Charlotte Mehmood removed the other opener in the sixth – spooning one back to her which she confidently pouched, having only made 2 from 17 balls with Streatham on 13/2 after six, Streatham would need a remarkable innings from someone. Unfortunately for Streatham there was no such innings, the 3rd wicket partnership doggedly resisted the unrelenting pace attack and had made it to the final over, in doing so however they only put 85 runs on the board. Bella struck twice in the final over – both bowled, to leave her with stand out figures of 4 overs, 10 for 3. Streatham capitulated on 89/4, a very lopsided 94 run win for Reigate.

Reigate used 9 bowlers, with only the centurion captain choosing not to bowl herself. Streatham were heavily depleted, and had only been able to select 10 players. Reigate was been able to field 11 talented all-rounders, whose strength belies their relatively young age – the average age of the team being just 16 years and 6 months, with no player yet in her 20’s – auspicious signs for the future of lady’s cricket at Reigate Priory.
