Any hopes Reigate Priory had of eclipsing the success of the 2009 Llamas who reached the National Club Twenty20 Finals Day were dashed Sunday at Sunbury when Guildford walloped the Priory in the semi-finals of the Surrey phase of the competition by 47 runs.
Guildford won the toss, batted first and within just four overs had over 50 runs on the board without loss.
Nathan Tilley, who has played 2nd XI cricket for Surrey this year and became the first boy ever at Reed’s School, Cobham, to score over 1,000 runs for the season, began aggressively by scoring 22 runs in the first three overs of the game. But then former Farnham player Joel Walker, Guildford’s wicket-keeper, scored 22 runs himself in the fourth over alone.
While Tilley was out for 30 at the end of the 5th over at 53-1, Guildford continued in this fast-scoring vein with Walker scoring his 50 in 30 balls before being caught for 57 off 30 balls at 108-3.
Joe Pipkin made 29 in 29 balls, while Fred McMillan ended the innings with 34 not out from 24 balls as Guildford posted a final score of 175-6 in the 20 overs.
Reigate’s first three bowlers were pounded for 113 runs in 10 overs between them. Reigate’s last three bowlers, all leg-spinners - Angus Dahl (2-24 in 4 overs), Michael Munday (2-16 in 4 overs) and, a rare sight this, Chris Murtagh (0-16 in 2 overs) – bowled considerably better, giving away only 56 in their 10 overs taken together.
Freddie Geffen, an off-spinner who plays in the Surrey Under 17 side, opened the Guildford bowling, and fourth ball of the innings had Richie Oliver caught and bowled for a first ball duck. While that was an obvious low point, the Reigate wickets continued to fall with regularity.
Three Reigate batsmen made scores in the 20s – Brad Scriven who hit 22 in 16 balls, Sam Hall who hit 27 in 23 balls and Jonathan Gale who led the lower order with 29 in 26 balls.
Scoring at a rate of 7 runs an over for the first 10 overs, with five wickets already lost, Reigate never looked to be in the chase for the win. And the Llamas finished on 128-9 after 20 overs.
In the first semi-final, Sunbury and East Molesey both scored 191 runs in their respective 20 overs. East Molesey won the subsequent bowl out but lost heavily to Guildford in the final.
Guildford scored 132 all out with Tilley top scoring with 34 runs while East Molesey could make only 76 in reply. Guildford therefore moves into the National phase of the competition with a fixture July 29 against Roffey CC of the Sussex league.
