Having moved up en masse a couple of weeks ago to take over the covid affected 2nd team’s fixture (& winning), the 3rd team were back in their own league with a visit to Wimbledon’s 3rd team ground next to the Chessington World of Adventures.
Simon Brewis won the toss and the Llama opening bowlers Mobeen Tahir (7-2-19-0) and Steve Cross put an immediate grip on the Wimbledon openers and after 10 overs had restricted Wimbledon to 22-0.
As the drizzle began to fall, so did the wickets as Crossy’s accuracy saw him bowl Sam McArthur (6) in the 11th over for 22-1, then bowl Adam Fox (2) in the 13th over for 24-2 before having Victor Bakker (26) lbw in the 17th over for 43-3.
With Mark Dabbs (4-1-13-0) replacing Mobeen, Wimbledon weren’t allowed to accelerate the scoring as Crossy’s accuracy saw him hit the stumps yet again to bowl hard hitting opposition captain Adam Slater (14) in the 23rd over to have Wimbledon at 60-4 with all 4 wickets falling to Crossy (11.4-2-27-4).
One ball later, with the time at 1.20 and with Llamas well on top, the heavens opened with a torrential downpour of cats and dogs and rain had not only stopped play but very nearly washed it away. After a delay of about an hour and a half, with the rain still falling, the match was abandoned.
Rain also meant top of the table Spencer’s game was also abandoned so they remain 21 points in front of the 2nd place Llamas. With 24 points available for a (timed) win, the away game at Spencer on the 14th August could well be the title decider.
