All Round Harrington Too Much For Banstead
Taking a break from behind the bar, Joe Harrington put in an excellent all-round display for the 5s
RPCC and Banstead entered this match needing to record their first proper win of the season. Priory were able to field a strong team lead by the experienced Geoff Chay
, deputising for Aaron.
Banstead won the toss and put the Llamas into bat on a greenish Mynthurst wicket. Openers Geoff Chay
and Dom Fifield did not find scoring runs easy. Dom was bowled for 4 and he was quickly followed by Steve Cross
, who was caught behind for 2. When Geoff was caught for 17, Priory were struggling at 27 for 3.
Suranjan and Matt van Staden put on 45 when Suranjan was caught behind for 17. Nick Harmer
was caught behind without scoring and the promising Priory recovery was beginning to falter.
Matt hit a very lively 33 before being bowled leaving us at 89 for 6. Joe Harrington
and Colt, Will Brewis
, were now at the wicket. Both played sensibly and punished any wayward bowling and built an impressive partnership of 53 before Will was bowled for 7. The remaining 3 wickets added just 17 runs and Joe was finally caught for an excellent 55.
Priory had posted Banstead a target of 160 to win.
and Mike Coxon
opened the bowling for Priory. Will was very economical and Mike made the first break through by bowling the opening bat. Simon Morris replaced Will and Joe Harrington
took over from Mike and introduced spin to the Priory attack. Joe took the second wicket to fall and this was followed by Simon bowling the Banstead number 5. Banstead were 63 for 3 off 18 overs and they were keeping with the required run rate, but crucially they were leaking wickets. The Banstead number 5 took a quick single to Nick Harmer
fielding at mid off. An excellent pick up and direct hit beat the batsman, giving a real boost to the whole team.
joined Joe for an all spin attack. Geoff, keeping behind the stumps, was very effective in gathering a turning ball. Matt was brought into an attacking silly mid off position after drinks and this was quickly followed by a wicket for Nick. The momentum was now with the Llamas. Joe bowled with accuracy and with real rip got the ball to turn. This led to Joe taking 4 further wickets, supported by catches from Matt, Nick and Simon Brewis
, with fifer being completed with a lbw. Joe finished with figures of 13 overs 5 for 29.
Will came back and took the last wicket for lbw to complete an excellent all round performance.
Spin won the day with Joe and Nick bowling 20 overs for just 37 runs for 6 wickets
Priory won by a confidence building 48 runs. We look forward to playing Oxted next week.
Man of the match for an excellent performance with bat and ball goes to Joe Harrington
