In this case “Needs” might not fit the bill , but “Good” certainly does as our neighbours the Banstead Rams played our own Reigate Rapids in the opening fixture of this season’s ECB U19 T20 Tier 1 South.
The toss was won by Banstead who put Reigate into bat. The wicket had plenty of pace and bounce and with Banstead 1st team opening bowler Nathan Barnwell bowling short of a length with the ball coming past at about chest height, runs were difficult to come by. But it was fellow opening bowler Krish Anand who took the 1st wicket having Will Hodgson (1) caught by Jo Glen at mid on for the Rapids to be 6-1 in the 2nd over. Captain Will Timmons (7) lost his leg stump to the same bowler 2 overs later and next ball Beau Dethridge (0) skied a short pitched ball to mid wicket to become Krish Anand’s 3rd wicket (4-0-11-3) leaving the Rapids 14-3 in the 4th over.
Banstead then introduced their trio of 3 left arm off spinners who were all to get prodigious turn out of the wicket. Their 2nd teamer Archie Fairfax-Ross dismissed Seth McDowall (7) when Seth’s raised foot saw him stumped by 2nd team keeper Freddie Ferro and 21-4 soon became 22-5 as Tyler Shoare (0) lost his leg stump to become Archie’s 2nd wicket (4-0-10-2).
A stand between Will Brewis and Tommy Bates took the Rapids score onto 50 when in the 14th over Will Brewis (11) was the 6th wicket to fall when he was caught at deep long on off the bowling of left arm spinner Jo Glen. The same combination of shot, catcher (Archie Fairfax-Ross) and bowler Jo Glen (4-0-20-2) saw Alex Wilbraham dismissed for 4 and Reigate were now 62-7 in the 16th over. Ed Russ (1) skied a ball from returning opening bowler Nathan Barnwell (4-0-15-1) and with just 10 balls left the Llamas were 67-8.
No more wickets lost as Tommy Bates (top scoring with 23 n.o.) was joined by T.J. Cossey (1 n.o.) and the pair took the final score to 74-8 after 20 overs.
With a small score to defend the Rapids needed a good start and got it with the 1st ball of the innings when Will Brewis got Banstead’s 2nd team opening bat Harsh Rajurkar (0) caught by Seth McDowall. Will was to take another wicket; this time having 1st teamer Arjun Gill caught by an excellent catch from Will Hodgson for Banstead to be 19-2 in the 3rd over.
But this was just the sideshow as fellow 1st teamer Ayush Patel proceeded to set about the Rapids bowlers Will Brewis (4-0-35-2), Ed Russ (2-0-30-0) and Will Hodgson (1-0-9-0) as his 19 ball score of 53; including 46 in boundaries, almost singlehandedly took Banstead to victory; but Ayush had to retire having reached his 50 and it was left to Banstead Captain Ben Butterfield (11 n.o.) to take his team to victory at 75-2 in just 7 overs.
